There's No Time Like Island Time!

Writer's picture: TammyTammy

The moment we step off the plane, the stress melts away, all worries are carried off by the island tradewinds, and that permagrin graces each of our faces as we inhale the sweet air of a place we once called home.

These days we get back as often as we can and November seems to be the sweet spot. Vancouver has started to get cold and rainy, the warm sunny days are replaced by gray gloomy ones. And that’s our signal to head West.

Each of us called Hawaii home for many years: me for 14 and Rob for 2. And since that is where we met, it holds a very special place in our hearts. We talk often about moving back one day. Until then, our visits feed our souls and fill our hearts with much Aloha and gratitude.

This year, we met up with family, which made the visit even more special. Add to that Rob’s birthday and our anniversary, and the celebrations were never-ending.

We decided to make this trip a budget conscious one since we would be spending two months in Central America just a couple of weeks after our return home. Hawaii continues to get more expensive, so budget travel is not impossible, but can be very challenging. Taking the bus certainly helped our pocketbook and getting out of Waikiki too.

You’ll learn soon enough that when we travel, we like to pack very minimally. I carry a 25 liter backpack and Rob carries a 30 liter pack - for two weeks, so packing becomes very thoughtful. We were doing a packing dry run for our Central America trip because we weren’t planning on taking much more. However, we find that our packing for Hawaii is very different from what we do for Central America.

This post is the first of many to open the door to share with you some of the more interesting aspects of our trip. In the coming weeks, we’ll cover more details on specific places of interest, our accommodations, the bus experience, and some fun Hawaiian facts and general tips. There’s just too much to cover in one post, so be sure to check back to read more.

In the coming weeks, you can expect to read more about our 2 week trip: 6 days on Oahu and 7 days on Kauai. Then stay tuned because the two months in Central America begins - trekking around Costa Rica and Nicaragua, with some turtle conservation volunteering added in....a life-long dream come true!
